The younger of Lord Hal Courtney’s twins, Guy Courtney is the gentler, more reticent brother, and tends to lag behind when there is danger. When he goes to sea with his father, twin, and brother Dorian, he stays on deck, watching and not taking part.
Despite not being an adventurer, he is musical and contributes with recitals for the assembled officers on board ship. He falls in love with Caroline Beatty, who is pregnant with Tom’s child, and realises the nautical life is not for him. Guy and Caroline move to Bombay, where Guy gets a job as an apprentice writer with Mr Beatty for the East India Company in Bombay. He later becomes consul of Zanzibar.
