An adventurer and trader, Ryder is orphaned early in life. He later becomes caught up in the siege of Khartoum, under the orders of General Charles George Gordon. It is here he meets his wife Saffron Benbrook, and her sisters Amber and Rebecca, as well as the soldier Penrod Ballantyne. He and Saffron settle in Abyssinia and found the Courtney mine, having two children together, Leon and Penelope.
